Another Tie, But With A Little Improvement…

May 29th, 2006 | By: Daniel | 2 Comments »

Last Saturday the Paraguayan National Team tied 1-1 with Denmark in Aahrus. The coach Anibal Ruiz held his idea of using all the players of the team and used only 3 players that played in the last friendly match. This time the team looked a little more compact with improvement in all the sectors, trying to play and risking a little more.

The good news is that the players that were resting in the last match entered the field and played well. The injured players Denis Caniza and Carlos Humberto Paredes played well, Cristian Riveros show that he is a player to take into account for any game, and Julio Manzur confirmed his good moment.

Julio Dos Santos is not playing well, and this should raise a yellow flag for the opening game of the World Cup. Jose Cardozo scored the goal after an error of the Denmark’s defense. He showed his well-known courage and work, but also that he is not in shape for playing more than 45 minutes.

Finally I believe that we found in Nelson Cuevas the replacement if Roque Santa Cruz cannot make it to the first game. His game has grown, and he is thinking more in playing with the team than for himself. If he keeps this attitude, I think that he is the one that should be in the starting line-up against England because Salvador Cabañas didn’t fit well in the team.

I agree 100% with Daniel. Nelson Cuevas looked like the star of the team against Denmark, showing glimpses of what he did against Slovenia (I think) in Japan, where he came into the second half scoring two goals and helping Paraguay go to the second round. Cabanas might be good in Mexico, but I think his reactions and gameplay are a tad too slow, so a sub striker is an ideal position for him. Cardozo too, he can’t even compete with the slowest defenceman, but if you give him the ball, he’ll put it in. Too bad Montiel had a bad game, he looked uncomfortable out there. And Julio “Danger in our own goal” Manzur actually played good, so that’s another plus for the Paraguayan defence. Acuna is irreplaceable, he plays with so much class and experience. I’m worried about Dos Santos as well. I don’t think left midfield is a position for him, but offensive defenceman, becuase when he gets to join the attack and touch the ball often, that’s where he starts to dominate. He needs the whole playing field to work with.

LIke I said in a couple of blogs before, Nelson Cuevas is not longer a “prommise”, he must understand that, he is a full grown up men now, so he need to stop playing like a kid.

This is the Cuevitas that we like to see, the one that glimpses with with speed but then gives the ball to the other players, playing with the team, not just alone.

So lets hope that he got the message but the benefit of the team and make a good connection with Nelson Haedo in the font line.
