FIFA Ranking: Paraguay # 33…

After reading the last FIFA Ranking, I don’t know if I am conform, surprise or upset. I really can’t affirm if the position #33 to Paraguay is right or not. Like the opinions of the Ecuador’s blog, I don’t know if we deserve to go higher in the ranking, but looking other teams on the list that question is hard to answer. Is Paraguay really worst than Iran, Côte d’Ivoire, or Costa Rica? Could USA really be four? And Mexico six? In my opinion this isn’t right, but the beauty of this situation is that in less than 50 days we will start having some answers to all these questions.

So, I hope that Blatter will force to those ranking guys to see all the World Cup’s games before making their next decision.

Paraguay is definitely better than No. 33. The FIFA rankings a very flawed. They seem to be based on numbers alone and don’t take into account the relative strength of the groups. The U.S.A. and Mexico tend to dominate weak competition — Costa Rica being the exception — and that pushes their ranking unnaturally high. Paraguay, which has to face not only Brazil and Argentina, but other strong teams such as Ecuador, Uruguay, etc., on a regular basis, ends up dropping further than they should. I think that Paraguay has an excellent chance of advancing and is even capable of upsetting England and winning the group. As you said, it should be fun.
