Japan Preview: Poised to make History

PYJP1

We are one of the 16 countries that have made it past the group stages. This is the best team we have ever sent to the World Cup and it is showing. I believe we will set more than one record in this World Cup. We have already made a great achievement, we have won our group.

Thanks to this achievement we are no longer going to face a football superpower in the Round of 16. No Germany, no France, no England. Tomorrow we face Japan, who are a very good team, but it is clear we are stronger. We have better players, we have played for years against stronger competitions. We have never gone into a Round of 16 game at the World Cup as the favorite. We will make this count.

The quarterfinals are not the final objective of Paraguay. With every game we play, we are writing a new chapter in our sports history and we are keen on writing a long book, SEVEN CHAPTERS LONG!!!!

Team news

Last I heard, Martino is hiding our line-up from the world and of course there are all sorts of rumors running around. First, it is unclear who will take the position of Victor Caceres who is suspended for this game. The likely candidates are Jonathan Santana and Nestor Ortigoza. Edgar Barreto’s name has also been thrown around, but I doubt he is fit to start such a game.

Other rumors are that Edgar “Pajaro” Benitez might start the game. He has been outstanding and I wonder if Martino is beginning to prefer Benitez over Haedo. Not sure.

Projected starting XI

Villar,
Caniza, Da Silva, Alcaraz, Morel
Vera, Santana, Riveros
Santa Cruz, Barrios, Haedo

FUERZA ALBIRROJA A VENCER O MORIR!!!!

Before the world cup, I would have welcomed this with open arms. Just our group stage performances were poor and I have a bad feeling about this. I hope I'm wrong, though.

Congratulations Paraguay, from me at the Japan blog. It was a poor match all round but you guys held your nerve when it mattered…good luck in the quarter finals – you may need it with Spain or Portugal lying in wait.

I've seen your match with Japan. It was quite good and I hope you will have great score in the quarter finals. I love You Paraguay Guys. Thank you from Korea.

Crikey – a lot of Koreans seem to be coming on here a little bitter about Japan. It's just a game of football guys…try celebrating your own team instead of hating another.

Victor – how do you fancy Paraguay's chances against Spain? Portugal almost contained them but not quite – I would imagine Paraguay will adopt a similar style, trying to stifle Spain and stop them playing tici taca – or whatever they call it!

Please dont think koreans all supported your team coz they hate Japan.. there are real fans who would support you anyway against any other country. And i expected Paraguay team play much better, i wanna see better play next time. I was touched when uguys were so happy and even the director cried, i will keep supporting you for the next game. Good luck! :D

What better measure of “soccer level” than world cup qualifying and world cup competition. Only one of these teams made the round of 16 and most did not even qualify. Get real.

You seem surprised Aidan. Its “Asian Pride”!

  • krentz

It's senseless, baseless prejudice is what it is. What a person's nationality has to do with themselves as a person or even their identity is beyond me. It seems to take a considerable degree of awareness for people to realise this, which is utterly perplexing to me as even little children would know better, unless they picked up bad habits from their parents.

Racism is a folly of a life lived from the ego's perspective.

    Cool story bro.

I think we have excellent chances. Spain has not demonstrated to be a goal scoring machine. We defend ten times better than any teams they have played, and we are more dangerous on the counter as well. We are no longer the favorites, and that suits us best.
